Explanation for the wait and why there was no news
Hello everyone.
TLDR:
I had some problems due to my own fault, and now the project is being moved from Godot to MonoGame.
If you are on the Discord, you already got the news and the explanation, but I will post it here too.
Was a long time huh? Well, I had to take a break due to various resons, the most important will be explained here.
Why did I disappear like that?
When the holiday wa shere, I wanted (and needed) to take a small break, but once I had the need to go back to work on the project, I found myself "blocked". I wanted to work, but my brain didn't, I did way less work than I wanted to, found myself unable to work on it, and I was starting to feel bad due to the community that was waiting for news about the project.
But well, if it was only that, I would not disappear for this long and without any news, but some personnals matter came that made me even more unable to work (personnals matter that will not be explained here for obvious reasons).
The last bullet was the fact that - And I want to be clear on this: It's ENTIRELY MY OWN FAULT and I'm very sorry about that - I lost everything.. every files, every UI mock-up, every home-made lib, E-VERY-THING due to a problem with my hard-drive. I got a back-up of it on my NAS (Network-Attached Storage) but due to a bug in my back-up, I lost a lots of my personnals projects (~60% of ALL of my projects, not only this one). Obviously, all files of RPG Creator was lost.
So here was my position:
- I lost all files of the project on my hard drive
- I lost all files of the project on my NAS
- I didn't have any other back-up (expect for a very old version on the GitHub repo and on a USB)
At this point, I didn't know what to do, stop the project, restart from scratch quickly without rest, just disappear from shame of my own stupidity, NGL I was lost.
So I decided to take a break, for as long as I need it, and decide once I was able to, and well, this is the moment.
What will happen now?
So I had to make a decision, and I made it:
The project will continue BUT it will not use Godot anymore, there is multiples reasons for this:
- Speed - Even if Godot is quick, it's not as quick as I wanted RPG Creator to be.
- Interface - While working on the project with Godot, I came to realize that there was a lots of thing that I had to make work with some "shady" way.
- Support - Even if Godot is not new, it's not as popular as other engine, so the community support around it is not the greatest.
- Language - GDScript is great, but not fast / C# support is here, but from what I could try, it's not really this greatly implemented yet.
But I didn't want to break one of the main point of the project Open-source now and forever. So I had to choose to where the project will be made in.
I searched, and compared..
C++? Nop, never, too much of work for me right now (I'm solo, I don't have time)
C#? Meh, better but not the best choice.
So I had to found a new "engine" to make it, that is open-source and allow me to do what I want to do, and here is the decision:
MonoGame.
To make it quick and easy: Monogame is more a "Library" than an "Engine". It allow me to have way more power on how thing work.
So now? When did we get any news?
Well, right now I'm starting to slowly create a new "skeleton" for the project. I will retake some of the UI mock-up from the discord server, and start to work on it again, slowly but surely.
This is maybe not the best choice, but this is a choice I made to continue working on it.
End message
I know that some of you will not like this, or don't trust me any more, I will not say that it's not my fault: This is entirely my own fault, and I'm sorry about it.
Now I made some new decision for myself that I should made way WAY sooner:
EVERY change, even bugged or not still finished will be pushed (uploaded) on the project repo in the "dev" branch.
The GitHub repo has already been edited to make it clear of the change.
On this, I hope you all have a great day / week.
See you soon :))
